Wow, we love our water.
We received more than 1,000 votes in the first six hours of voting for Michigan’s Best Inland Lake.
That’s a crazy amount of votes so quickly, but it’s also expected when you consider we had 142 nominations and some pretty passionate pleas for lakes across the state.
Keep those votes coming in for the best lakes in our nine regional polls. Your votes will decide some close races. Many of regional poll leaders are separated by only a few votes.

The food at a Grand Rapids bar that’s a finalist for Michigan Best’s Fish Fry is a ‘happy surprise’

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Charlie’s Bar & Grille is a finalist for Michigan’s Best Fish Fry.
The popular bar, located on the bustling Plainfield Avenue corridor at 3519 Plainfield Ave. NE, has been a longtime hangout for locals.
It’s “more restaurant than bar,” said owner Jodi Wilterdink. “The food is a real happy surprise for people.”
The daily specials include plenty of seafood options, especially during the Lenten season when 90% of the specials are seafood.
The steamed mussels, drenched in spicy tomato, olive oil, garlic and white wine, have been a big hit with patrons, Wilterdink said.

Pie! Hands down, said Linda Hundt, owner of Sweetie-licious Pies.
“No matter what, pie brings you home,” said Hundt, whose store just celebrated 15 years in business in DeWitt, Michigan.
“There is no other dessert that truly takes you back to the holidays, and Thanksgiving, and birthdays, and Fourth of July celebrations. Usually there is some kind of pie associated with really, really thoughtful and sweet memories for people.”

The Michigan restaurant industry is struggling right now. Everyone knows that.
Just this week, 97 percent of Michigan businesses that applied for $15,000 COVID-19 grants were expected to be turned away, according to a recent MLive story.
But local community restaurants, especially diners, face additional challenges.
Takeout business is typically a small portion of sales. Gone are bustling tables of regulars meeting up for coffee or weekend get togethers with family and friends.
