Maltese design studio Mizzi Studio has been selected to design a new family kitchen for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in southwest London. The kitchen will be sited directly beside their Children’s Garden – a verdant, natural setting that allows children to explore and play surrounded by the presence of earth, air, sun and water.
The team received overwhelmingly positive scores and feedback following the tender process, which comprised entries from international architecture firms such as HOK. The tender panel was struck by Mizzi Studio’s holistic, nature-driven approach to the project brief.
The design offers food in a theatrical, nature-led and technology-driven setting. Comprising food preparation stations, dining areas and retail, the kitchen marries fantasy and nature with science, promoting education, wonder, organic dominance, food culture, and interactivity.
What is the inspiration behind Saloni?
When I first started designing clothes in 2003, the inspiration was to fill a gap in the luxury brand-dominated market in Hong Kong. I wanted to add something more personal to the retail landscape here that was more fun and affordable. We collaborated with artisans in India and sold one-off pieces.
How long did it take to bring the brand to life?
I moved to London in 2004 and got some experience in fashion, then after a few years, I decided to take what I had learnt and started Saloni in London in 2010.

Not all architecture needs to scream or be iconic says commenter
David Chipperfield Architects s latest New York project is The Bryant, a 32-storey mixed-use concrete skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan.
The British studio undertook the project for New York-based developers HFZ Capital Group. The building overlooks Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. Tough crowd here
Readers are divided. Boring and indistinguishable, said Jack Woodburn on one hand. It looks like scores of buildings across America.
David disagreed: Tough crowd here! I think this building does a great job. It s subtle, which I think is the right way to go for this location and height. It s timeless. All materials feel high-end in an understated way, which I find the ultimate luxury. Not all architecture needs to scream or be iconic.
