Motorcycle Riders Driving Cross Country To Raise Funds For Cancer Research

By Jaryn Vecchio Banner for cross country ride // Jaryn Vecchio - Harvard Broadcasting A group of friends will be driving cross country to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Starting on Tuesday, Annie Lelievre and members of the Metal Saints will be traveling from Fort McMurray to Gaspé, Quebec. They’re coming off a 200 km ride along Highway 63 to honour all the individuals who’ve died on the road. Lelievre tells Mix News, despite the long trip, it wasn’t hard to find the motivation to do the ride. “Two of the ladies that ride with me have lost their fathers within the last couple of years due to cancer and we have a lot of girlfriends right now battling cancer.”

For the tenth year in a row, several vehicles will drive down the road as a way to honour all the past victims. Founder Annie Lelievre tells Mix News she started the ride to remember her son Jason who died in an accident back in 2011. Her ex-husband John also pass away on the road just a couple years later. She says it’s extremely hard to process that her son has been gone for almost a decade.

Construction Set To Start On Crosswalk Between NLRHC & Willow Square

Wood Buffalo council met virtually on Tuesday where they approved spending $170,000 on the path. Mayor Don Scott, who brought the idea forward, tells Mix News he’s been told many residents at Willow Square have mobility issues and need an easy way to get to the hospital. “There is a crosswalk if you go in a different direction but a more convenient crosswalk makes sense.”

Owl Moon Environmental Inc. have been counting the bird population in the region since 2011 in an attempt to see the impacts industry has had on the species. Since June 2016, a lot of their attention has focused on how the wildlife is reacting following one of the biggest fires in the country’s history. Christine Godwin, Co-Owner of Owl Moon Environmental, tells Mix News, unsurprisingly, they saw a big drop in population.
