NC Wildlife Federation recognizes Bell, Sasser

The N.C. Wildlife Federation named Rick Sasser of Goldsboro as its Marine Resource Conservationist of the Year and House Majority Leader John Bell its Legislator of the Year as part of its 57th annual Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards. First presented in 1958, the Governor’s Conservation Achievement Awards are the highest natural resource honors given in the state. North Carolina citizens nominate conservation leaders, professionals and volunteers of all ages and backgrounds from across the state. A committee of scientists, environmental educators and conservation activists select award winners. Sasser is being recognized for working tirelessly for decades to conserve and preserve the coastal marine resources of North Carolina for future generations, according to the N.C. Wildlife Federation.

Seven Springs levee idea moves forward

A proposed levee along the Neuse River at Seven Springs and a pilot project to address chronic flooding in the Stoney Creek watershed are two of the items in flood-mitigation legislation making its way through the General Assembly. The “Disaster Relief and Mitigation Act,” House Bill 500, would allocate more than $200 million on projects to prevent flooding and to plan ahead for damaging storms. It would be “the largest and most comprehensive statewide investment that North Carolina has ever made to prepare for future storms,” said House Majority Leader John Bell, R-Wayne, one of the primary sponsors. Approximately $15.2 million of that funding would be for projects that have an impact on Wayne County, Bell said.
