BHOPAL: Mukesh Kirar, prime accused in the Morena hooch tragedy that claimed 24 lives and blinded three persons, was arrested in Chennai on Sunday. Police were looking for him for the past five days and had announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for his arrest. DGP Vivek Johri confirmed the arrest and said Kirar was nabbed by MP police with assistance from Chennai cops. On the same day, the Madhya Pradesh government razed Kirar’s house in Chera village, the epicentre of the hooch tragedy. “Villagers undergoing treatment in hospital have said that they had got the liquor from three persons. When the trio was questioned, they named Mukesh Kirar as the main supplier,” said Kailaras subdivisional police officer Sashi Bushan Raghuvanshi. The other three suspects are in custody.

Identified as Lalita Raje, the BJP Mahila Morcha head in Pohri sub-division of Shivpuri district of Gwalior-Chambal region has been arrested and booked under the provisions of the Excise Act.

Later, people in some other nearby villages also fell ill after consuming spurious liquor, police had said. A three-member team headed by Additional Chief Secretary Rajesh Rajora reached Manpur village on Thursday to conduct a probe into the incident. The other members of the committee are Additional Director General of Police (CID) A Sai Manohar and Deputy Inspector General Mithilesh Shukla. The state government has removed the entire staff of Bagchini police station on charges of negligence in duty, an official said. Morena s Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Sujit Bhadira has also been suspended by the government, he said. The government on Wednesday transferred Morena s collector and superintendent of police.
