Class assignment empowers undergrad to advocate for municipal action around anti-Asian discrimination

A recent project assigned by Dr. Dawn Rault as part of the Law and Society 335 class provided students an opportunity to be advocates of social justice.  The project consisted of an advocacy letter and an annotated bibliography addressed to an important community leader and centered on a social justice issue of the students’ choosing. Alicia Revington, a third year undergraduate student, wrote her letter about the increase in racism and disrimination directed at Asian Canadians as a result of COVID-19.  “It was a really powerful assignment and I am very grateful to Dr. Rault for providing us with that opportunity,” said Revington.

W.A. Ranches receives approval for long range development plan W.A. Elizabeth Fry Society holds online charity auction

The Elizabeth Fry Society (EFry), an organization supporting vulnerable populations involved with the justice system, is hosting an online charity auction until Dec. 15. The COVID-19 pandemic has adjusted the organization’s method of business as a direct-to-client service support as well as led to significant funding cuts expected in early 2021. Katelyn Lucas, Executive Director of EFry, stressed that numerous programs offered by the organization were at risk due to the expected funding cuts.   The organization assists vulnerable populations through programs of Affordable Housing, Immigrant Legal Advocacy, Court Programs, Indigenous Cultural Supports, Legal Advocacy, Prison Community Outreach, Emotional Wellness and Employment Readiness. EFry is best known for working with women in the prison system to prepare them for their release into the community.
