BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - Iowa’s Great River Road, a National Scenic Byway that runs through Burlington, has earned a new distinction by the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Federal Highway Administration.
On Feb. 16, the road, along with 14 other scenic byways, received the designation of All-American Road, the first such upgrade by the FHA since 2009.
“I think it’s outstanding, it’s huge,” Burlington Mayor Jon Billups told The Hawk Eye last week. “They don’t make those designations everyday. And it could very well mean it could increase tourism in our area.”

Three Wisconsin roads have received new National Scenic Byway designations from the Federal Highway Administration, cementing them as some of the state s best places for scenic drives.
The

Great River Road already a National Scenic Byway has been declared an All-American Road.
Wisconsin s 250-mile segment of Great River Road follows Highway 35 from Prescott to Kieler along the Mississippi River through the western part of the state. The road follows the river for its entire 3,000-mile course from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. In 2012, readers of Huffington Post voted it as America s prettiest drive.
The designation opens the stretch of road in Burlington that includes Cascade Bridge to federal grant opportunities.
