Under the watchful eye of riot police, the two dozen or so homeless Montrealers who had set up tents and trailers in the Boisé Steinberg packed up their belongings and scattered this week.
They might have left, but they are not gone. And neither are the bigger problems Montreal’s most recent urban encampment have helped to expose.

Montreal, once a reputed renter’s paradise, long managed to avoid the phenomenon of tent cities that have sprouted across North America as a testament to growing unaffordability. But no longer. A large camp on Notre-Dame St. in the east end was forcibly broken up last fall and a smaller outpost near the Mont-Royal métro in the Plateau-Mont-Royal was recently removed. The eviction of the latest group in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve is unlikely to be the last.
