this live scale invasion, almost 100 missiles were fired in ukraine, many of people have been left without electricity. so this is an important thing that happened yesterday, and neither this massive missile attack. nor the tragic incident in poland would have happened, you know, if this war was not going on. if they had not invaded our country. if ukrainians had gone to a close. and we were trying to close our skies for a long time now. and we ve been talking about this almost on a daily basis. and actually,, today there will be a long-standing meeting of the ministers of defense of over 50 countries. and we believe, and that we almost conquer them. the air defense capabilities of ukraine will continue to be a top priority for us, and for our international partners. of course, this missile landing in poland brings this war to a critical juncture. we do have to emphasize that.
we have a news breaking right now. we re learning who was likely behind the missile landing in poland. and president trump saying he will run for office again after multiple investigations, disappointing results for midterms. and the family member staying off the campaign trail. and mitch mcconnell has a challenger for his job as the top gop leader in the senate. what s behind rick scott s move and how mitch mcconnell is responding. we are now learning it was not russia that fired a missile into poland that killed two people overnight. obviously poland is a member of the military alliance known as nato. but instead initial u.s. assessments are that it likely came from ukrainian forces. this comes as nato ambassadors are holding an emergency meeting this morning to discuss the deadly explosion.
they re saying it s provocation which is exactly what you would expect to hear. the nato alliance members very aware of that rhetoric, very aware, of course, how quickly rhetoric can be inflamed and passions can be ignited. given all the implications of invoking article 4 and article 5, given the seriousness of what that would represent, of course they re going to be taking very measured language and considering very carefully what that is. you ll see a halfway house and the member states that are close to the border. the need for a no fly zone to try to prevent this incident from ever sort of happening again. bianca? nina, there was a very quick response from moscow. they described this missile landing as a deliberate provocation. what do you think they meant by that? reporter: that came from the russian ambassador to the united nations. that s going to be a security
it claims that this war was started by nato and the west, and russia s ally china, which has been very loathe to openly criticize russia s conduct of the war. back to you. right. and meantime, nina, russia is denying firing this missile into poland. what is the latest on russia s reaction? well, rosemary, they ve repeatedly denied any involvement in this missile landing on polish and indeed nato territory. and in fact, overnight, perhaps seizing upon joe biden, the u.s. president s comments, reporters there saying that early indications are that this may have been potentially a stray ukrainian missile. we saw the representative to the united nations that the russian federation say, quote, any attempt to this incident was an attempt to provoke a direct clash between nato and russia, a
country. if ukrainian skies were closed. and we ve been requesting to close our skies for a long time now. and we re talking to our international partners about this almost on a daily basis. and actually, today there will be a lunchtime meeting of the ministers of defense of 50 countries. and we believe and we are almost confident that the air defense capabilities of ukraine will continue to be a top priority both for us and future our international partners. and for more, we go now to melissa bell, who joins us live from nato headquarters in brussels. good to see you, melissa. so the consequences of this missile landing in poland are immense, of course. and that is exactly why an investigation is so crate cal. what are you learning? it is because of all the potential consequences, the invoking of article 4, article 5 were at some point decided this has been a strike that poland considered a threat to itself.
