fact that the u.s. and north korea can t even agree on what they disagreed on. they don t even have a story that matches about what just happened, the bottom line is that no matter what the north koreans wanted from us, the only thing they were willing to give us was the destruction of this one facility, like an old decaying facility that they ll have to get rid of any way not to mention they re entire nuclear arsenal that they still have. right. they weren t willing to put anything on the table that showed the real sincerity for denuclearization and, of course, trump had to walk away. he s right. it would have been a very terrible deal but it s not as if, you know, a failure of a summit of this kind is just a wash or draw. time is on north korea s side and what they get is an extension of this process and meanwhile, while we try to figure out what to do next, they ll keep increasing their missile capability and kim jong-un gets to parade around the world with his new
korea, even mike pompeo yesterday saying that north korea is still a nuclear threat despite what president trump was tweeting out that it was not. could this have an impacted on the upcoming talks between trump and kim this week when you have the u.s. really on senior members of the administration on disagreeing sides? yeah, absolutely. pompeo s job is really not an enviable one. he s been handed this sort of flaming bag of poop, i would say. i don t think that anyone besides this president is excited heading into this summit. north korea continued to expand its missile program. working on more material to make nuclear bombs. the more nuclear weapons and the more missile capability north korea has, the harder it will be to take them away. just like a kid with chocolate. the more chocolate they have, the harder it is to take away. so the it s understandable that pompeo and the president
pretty good job the last four, five, six years building up his nuclear capabilities as well as his missile capability, and at a time when china, the united states, other countries basically did not take any action to prevent that. second, we re at a spot now where i think the president very much wants a win. we all know he wants to win the nobel peace prize. but if he can get some agreement with kim jong-un, he then will take that as a victory and go home and say, hey, look, i ve normalized relations on the peninsula, and kim jong-un is not going to be a threat anymore. i think that s a hollow statement, that kim will still be a threat. he ll always be a threat for the foreseeable future. and that s because it is his whole card. it s a way he can keep power.
cautious approach this time? i think expectations are lower. i think they realized they re not going to get denuclearization as they ve described it in the past. and they want some kind of agreement, so they re going to agree to something less than they have been talking about earlier. so what could be the agreement? what would be the hope that the white house, you know, could be reaching toward or, in your view, what would be considered an accomplishment from this second summit? i think if there are dates, like benchmarks, where by a certain date north korea commits to opening up parts of its country as further extension, examination. frankly we need entry, too, of north korea s missile capability. the north koreans haven t given us that. just an inventory of what they have. i d like to see that.
korea doesn t have that missile capability. i believe putin. what s your reaction? well, obviously, that s very, very concerning to me. these are his intelligence folks who are calling lots of points of collection, meaning human and electronic and digital. every form of int as they would say. they take all of that information and then they come up with a policy or at least proposal or at least an understanding of what s going on in the world. the president needs to have faith and trust in that information. it s the best that we have by the best that we have in america to provide it. and so when you walk away from that information, that to me is very, very concerning. and you can t not want to believe it. it s the one good thing about the intelligence community is they ll lay it on your table. it may not fit your political narrative. it may. but they ll tell you what the facts on the ground are and then it s up to policymakers to take it from there. saying off the chart that, gee, i j
