(AP Photo/Nati Harnik) EVANSTON, IL Northwestern University s cheerleading program functioned as an illegal sex trafficking operation that subjected cheerleaders to pervasive sexual assault and harassment, according to a lawsuit filed by one of its members. The suit alleges that positions on the cheerleading team were conditioned on being groped by wealthy older donors and intoxicated fans in order to encourage contributions to the university. In order to avoid the financial penalties associated with losing a spot on the team, cheerleaders were forced to endure groping and harassment, according to the suit.

North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors Bureau grant awards announced

(North Platte, Nebraska, January 29, 2021) – It has been a year since the Advisory Committee of the North Platte / Lincoln County Visitors Bureau provided funding to help promote area events and attractions. The committee considered grant applications in January of 2020, but when the April deadline came around, the Covid-19 pandemic was in full swing and the committee voted to waive further consideration until the full effect of the pandemic on lodging tax receipts could be calculated.   For the calendar year of 2020, lodging tax receipts are down around 30%, and it is possible the spring could still be very bleak months. Like a one-sided baseball pennant race, the only drama in choosing the top local stories for 2020 is the race for second place. Let’s face it: COVID-19 was North Platte’s biggest story of the year. It’ll probably be 2021’s biggest story as well. The pandemic permeated virtually everything that happened after February — even the many local examples of “good news” that thankfully broke through the dark clouds of America’s worst health crisis since 1918.
