The first day of early voting in Athens went off without a hitch Monday as 1,402 voters turned out to cast ballots in the two U.S. Senate runoff elections that have garnered national attention.
“We had lines, but nobody was in line over, I’d say, 15 minutes,” Athens-Clarke County Elections Assistant Pam Long said Tuesday.
The Jan. 5 runoff election for the two seats pits incumbent Republican David Perdue against Democratic Party challenger Jon Ossoff and incumbent Republican Kelly Loeffler against Democrat Raphael Warnock.
The elections are expected to determine which party controls the U.S. Senate.
In Athens, 1,200 votes were cast at the Lyndon House Arts Center and another 202 at the Miriam Moore Community Center on McKinley Drive, according to Long.
