Hello, Leodis McDaniel High School Updated Feb 24, 2021; Posted Feb 24, 2021 Leodis McDaniel, who oversaw the desegregation of what was then Madison High School, was chosen as the building s new namesake by a committee of students, staff, alumni and community members.Photo courtesy Portland Public Schools Facebook Share Madison High School is no more. The Northeast Portland school once named after the fourth president of the United States is now Leodis V. McDaniel High. A coalition of students, educators, alumni and community members chose one of the school’s beloved former principals as its next namesake. The group surveyed nearly 2,500 people since September and received more than 400 nominations.

When Happy Ned Year 2019 hit the paper a year ago, I sure did not foresee that the next year would so vigorously reframe the very essence of this now 20-year-old column: To celebrate the strange and unexpected, and obscure stuff either unearthed or made up. So here again goes Happy Ned Year, your annual random scrum of crumbs swept from the tattered tablecloth of 2020. (Was the cocktail year 2020 not the perfect time for mixing metaphors?) And, Happy 2021; our sense of optimism gives new meaning to the phrase “a new ring.” It’s amazing: I Googled, and could not find, any play on the word toxin as “talk sin.” Not even from the lips of some super-spreader church pastor.
