Senate Democrats clear the way for Durbin to be party’s leader on Judiciary Committee Mike DeBonis, Paul Kane Senate Democrats cleared the way Wednesday for Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois to become the party’s leader on the Senate Judiciary Committee, settling what had become a contentious internal dispute. Durbin has served as party whip, the No. 2 leader, since 2004, and some more-junior senators questioned whether it was appropriate for him to hold that position and lead a major committee. In a closed-door vote whose tally was not publicly released, Democrats voted to allow Durbin, 76, to hold both jobs, according to four officials familiar with the result who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly.
