Utah state Sen. David Hinkins’ Violence, Disorder, and Looting Enforcement Protection Act (Senate Bill 138) is headed for its final legislative debate.
This bill would increase the penalty for people criminally charged as rioters. In an alarming decree, the bill uses language proposed by Rep. Jon Hawkins in November. It provides that “a motor vehicle operator who unintentionally causes injury or death to an individual is not criminally or civilly liable for the injury or death,” when fleeing a riot.
We spoke to Union Bridge Mayor Perry Jones recently about racial justice. The businessman, former county commissioner and current president of the Maryland Municipal League, who is among the most prominent African American politicians in Carroll County’s history, told us how how critical he views the role of education, of looking back, in helping to avoid a repeat of some of what happened in 2020 and move forward.

Vermont ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s is honoring football quarterback Colin Kaepernick with a new flavor blending his civil rights activism and non-dairy, vegan appetite.
“Change the Whirled” a mix of caramel sunflower butter, fudge chips, graham crackers and chocolate cookies will raise money for Kaepernick’s “courageous work to confront systemic oppression and to stop police violence against Black and Brown people,” the company said in a statement Thursday.
Kaepernick, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, sparked headlines in 2016 by kneeling in protest during the national anthem to shed light on police brutality against minorities.
