Nice to meet you, The Memo reader! I am now in my fourth week of living and working in the Twin Ports as the News Tribune s new business and health industry reporter. Getting to know a new community is always a big challenge, but doing so while working remotely in a pandemic is on a whole other level.
Luckily for me, I’ve already found myself to be surrounded by so many helpful resources. Between my co-workers at the newspaper and some very kind community members who have helped point me in the right directions, I’m slowly but surely getting acquainted with the area and its happenings.

Applications will be available Friday for Becker County’s new economic recovery grant programs.
The Becker County Board, working with local business owners and the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce, has created three grant programs to aid county businesses affected by COVID-19. Funding comes from $665,000 in state dollars.
“I would like to thank the local business owners who were on the committee for their input. They helped make these programs fair and an easier application process,” Becker County Board Chair Barry Nelson said in a news release.

Alexandria City Council members vowed to follow three “Rs” in 2021 – their roles, responsibilities and respect.
At their first meeting of the year Monday night, they unanimously adopted a Code of Conduct for elected officials.

St. Louis County Preps Third Round Of COVID Relief Assistance
More relief is in sight for operators of small businesses and non-profits in the Northland. St. Louis County is getting details together for a third round of COVID-19 Relief Assistance for those who qualify. This new round of assistance money in the form of St. Louis County Small Business Relief Grants will utilize dollars available from the State of Minnesota.
The initial application period will begin in mid-January. Businesses will be able to apply for up to $45,000 - with stipulations that the funds are used for direct COVID-19 related expenses - such as PPE and cleaning supplies as well as operating expenses - including rent, mortgage, utilities, real estate taxes, and insurance. Eligible small businesses can even use the grant funding for payroll.
Lyon County Museum
The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on January 3, 1908:
The graduates for the year 1905 of the Marshall High School held a class party in the Woodmen hall on Tuesday evening of this week. Of a class of 28 there were 20 who were able to be present. Music, games and light refreshments furnished entertainment for the evening.
