The Minnesota Elementary School Principals’Association (MESPA) recognized Liam Dawson, principal of Northside Elementary School in St. James with the 2021 MESPA Division Leadership Achievement Award for MESPA’s Southwest Division.
Principals are responsible for a school’s instructional, school culture, and resource leadership. The award honors principals whose exemplary leadership and sustained efforts have made noteworthy contributions to the operation of effective school learning programs improving education, their communities, and their profession.
Dawson was recognized by colleagues statewide on April 15 at the MESPYs, the premier elementary principal celebration of the year celebrated via YouTube livestream.
Dawson summed up his educational philosophy with a quote from Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

ST. CLOUD – Roughly eight hours into a nine-hour standoff at a Wells Fargo bank in St. Cloud on Thursday evening, crisis negotiators brought pizza to the bank s front doors.
Shortly after, the last of five hostages made a break for the door and rushed outside as officers entered the building and took the 35-year-old suspect into custody.
None of the captives all employees of the bank on St. Cloud s west side suffered life-threatening injuries, officials said. But the situation was fraught with threats from the suspect that escalated and waned during the afternoon and evening.

A 25-year-old substitute teacher is accused of sextortion involving teenage victims and child pornography.
Mitchell James Ottinger, of Carver, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of production and attempted production of child pornography and two counts of making extortionate threats, the U.S. Attorney s Office in Minnesota said Wednesday. He has a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. on May 7 in U.S. District Court.
Charges say he posed as a girl and directed minors to send him nude photos and then extorted them unless the victims met his additional demands for more images.
Substitute teacher charged for alleged sextortion of minors

CARVER, Minn. (FOX 9) - A 25-year-old substitute teacher has been federally charged for an alleged sextortion case involving minors and authorities believe there could be more victims.
Mitchell James Ottinger of Carver, Minnesota was arrested on Tuesday. He is charged with two counts of production and attempted production of child pornography and two counts of making extortionate threats.
According to court documents, Ottinger pretended to be a young woman on the internet in order to get the images and videos of minors and an adult. Some of his aliases included Taylor Malek and Rachel Meyer.
