The coronavirus epidemic is raging across Europe, but has hit Central and Eastern Europe harder. Although some countries, such as Lithuania and Moldavia, have been able to hold elections, the very worrying public health situation in Romania did not inspire optimism ahead of Sunday’s legislative elections, in which Romanians were called upon to elect the 330 seats in the
Camera Deputaţilor (the lower house) and the 136 seats in the
Senatul (the upper house) of the Romanian
Parlamentul.
The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has dominated the Romanian political scene since the fall of the dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu in 1989, having controlled the government for twenty of the last thirty years. For the past years, however, scandals have piled up. Recent events suggest Romanians have had enough of the PSD.
