ARAKAPAS, July 5 Cyprus said a deadly forest fire that was the worst to hit the island in decades was close to being brought under control Sunday after water bombing by Greek and Israeli aircraft.
Fanned by strong winds, the fire broke out Saturday afternoon and swept through the southern foothills of the Troodos mountain range as the country grappled with a blistering heatwave.

Firefighters in Cyprus said on Monday they had brought under control the island s worst blaze on record, which ripped through mountain forests and farmland, killing four people and destroying scores of homes.
Water-bombing planes from Greece and Israel and British aircraft from bases on the Mediterranean island helped douse the huge fire, which blackened 55 square kilometres of the Troodos Mountains.
The Cyprus Forestry Department said the fire that broke out on Saturday. came under full control today on Monday morning local time.
The fire - described by the forestry department as the worst since the Republic of Cyprus establishment in 1960 - killed four Egyptian labourers, destroyed 50 homes, damaged power lines and forced the evacuation of 10 villages.

Nicosia, July 5 : Four people were killed in a massive forest fire which has been raging for almost 24 hours in a mountainous area of Cyprus, police said.
Charalambos Alexandrou, director of the Department of Forests, said on Sunday that the fire was the worst ever in the history of Cyprus, reports Xinhua news agency.
The police said that the victims were four Egyptian nationals, aged 25 to 30, who were deployed as agricultural workers at Odou village.
The fast moving fire, which was fanned by strong winds over an area of at least 55 square km within two hours, has affected 10 mountain communities northeast of the port city of Limassol.
