The second round of nationwide antigen testing organised between 18 January and 26 January in Slovakia was attended by about 2.9 million – of which 1.24% tested positive – a new record in the number of hospitalisations since the start of the pandemic was reached.
Mass screening was organised despite objections from experts, scientists, and most local governments, who called for targeted testing in selected regions, citing the financial burden and exhaustion of medical staff.
Slovakia transitioned to a hard lockdown about a month ago. Negative COVID-tests are required to go to work and meeting people from outside one’s household is forbidden. The next round of testing will take place in just 36 districts where the share of positive was higher than 1%.
