Renowned journalist Arif Nizami passes away

LAHORE: Seasoned journalist and Editor of the daily “Pakistan Today” Arif Nizami passed away here Wednesday after being hospitalized for two weeks, the family sources confirmed. He had suffered a heart attack and was admitted to a private hospital in Lahore.
Arif Nizami was the son of Hameed Niazi, the founder of the Nawa-i-Waqt. He had served as the caretaker minister for information and postal services during former caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso’s Cabinet in 2013. He was also elected as the president of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE). Arif Nizami also remained editor of The Nation, a sister daily of Nawa-i-Waqt. Later, he launched his own newspaper “Pakistan Today”. President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death of Arif Nizami and prayed for the departed soul. Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday, assuring all-out efforts by Pakistan to investigate the July 16 incident regarding the daughter of Afghan ambassador in Islamabad, urged the Afghan government to reconsider its decision of recalling their envoy and senior diplomats from Pakistan.
“As the presence of Afghan ambassador in Pakistan is very important for further strengthening and broadening bilateral relations, this absence will not be in the interest of the two countries,” Qureshi said while addressing a press conference along with National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad at the Foreign Office.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov Tuesday discussed the regional security including Afghanistan and human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
During a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Dushanbe, Tajikistan foreign minister Qureshi briefed his counterpart of the rapidly transforming situation in Afghanistan and highlighted importance of consistent support to Afghan peace process as shared responsibility.
He underlined that the region could not afford repeat of civil war, leading to instability and fresh influx of refugees.
