The minister with responsibility for road safety has said that when it comes to the recent spike in road deaths in Ireland, “a lot of it is personal responsibility”.
Minister Jack Chambers said that “behaviours slipped” during Covid-19 lockdowns as roads weren’t as congested, but added that there are other factors such as drink and drug driving, using a phone while driving, and speeding that are leading to the surge in road deaths. Four people died in a 24-hour period so far this week in separate accidents in Cork, Dublin and Donegal.
