Care for Gaza children in Egypt close to loved ones, not Netherlands: Red Cross

The Red Cross is hesitant about the government’s proposal to bring injured children from Gaza to the Netherlands. In the radio program Met Het Oog op Morgen, Carla Jonkers, head of international emergency aid at the Dutch Red Cross, said on Monday evening that it is “absolutely” preferable to care for these children in Egypt, close to their loved ones and where caregivers understand their culture and language.

Health Council approves research on older embryos

Scientists can conduct research for not 14 but 28 days with embryos that are kept alive specifically for this purpose, according to the Health Council. It mainly concerns embryos that are left over after IVF treatment and are donated for research. “Ethically, there is no point in time at which research with embryos is inadmissible, except late in development,” the Health Council said in advice to the Cabinet. However, drawing a line depends on all kinds of factors, according to the council.

MPs want government to open outpatient clinics for people with Long Covid

A majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament, wants outpatient clinics for people with Long Covid. ChristenUnie parliamentarian Nico Drost made a proposal to this effect in the Kamer on Wednesday evening. The proposal got support from D66, CDA, PVV, GroenLinks-PvdA, SGP, and BBB. According to Drost, many patients “yearn” for effective treatment. But it is “unfortunately not available yet,” he said in the parliamentary debate on the social impact of Long Covid. “Seriously ill people are sometimes desperate because they don’t know where to turn.”
