Munroe says he was not prepared to work with prison chief

In a new court filing, Minister of National Security Wayne Munroe has outlined events he said led to a decision within days of the change in government in September 2021 to place Commissioner of Corrections Charles Murphy on administrative leave, including what he contends was Murphy’s inability to provide an update on COVID-19 protocols at the prison.

Minister Dames: It’s a normal occurrence; don’t read too deeply into it NASSAU, BAHAMAS The Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) yesterday advised its heads of departments to submit the names of marines expected to vote in the advanced polls in the upcoming general election. In a memo sent out on April 29, the law enforcement agency said the move is “in preparation for the possibility of an early General Election”. Marvin Dames. Speaking to reporters outside Cabinet yesterday, Minister of National Security Marvin Dames, who has responsibility for elections, said the memo is “nothing out of the ordinary”. “I won’t read too deeply into that,” he said. “This is a normal occurrence and I don’t think you should read too deeply into that either. Only one person will determine the date of the election and he hasn’t yet done so.”

At a contract signing with the Bahamas judiciary and Anchor Group, Chief Justice Moree said: “What I can say is that we have each division of the court system looking at the backlog and we’re attacking it two different ways. We’re looking at the backlog as it existed prior to March 2020 in other words prior to the major shutdown as a result of the pandemic. That was a pre-COVID backlog. That is an inventory which we have been managing for sometime and will have to continue to manage that.

Marvin Dames met with Chairman of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Committee and former Police Commissioner Paul Farquharson, on December 14, 2020, at his Ministry s Head Office, University Drive.  Among those present from the Ministry included Deputy Permanent Secretary Lisa Adderley; Under Secretary Cheryl Darville; and Legal In-House Counsel Paul Jones.  Minister Dames noted that the meeting was to get an update on the progress of the Committee, especially in terms of the processing of applications by young persons and first-time offenders.  We are very excited about this Committee; hence the reason why our Government wanted to see this Committee flourish and come into being,   Minister Dames said.  The focus now is to ensure that Bahamians everywhere understand the objectives behind this Committee the purpose of the Committee especially those out there with police records.
