A Western Cape MEC says Freedom Square embodies the spirit and legacy of Bonteheuwel s heroes and heroines. Bonteheuwel s Freedom Square is now officially a provincial heritage site. The square, in the suburb s central business district (CBD), holds historic significance. It is the place where anti-apartheid freedom fighters often gathered to strategise and organise. On Monday, Western Cape Arts and Culture MEC Anroux Marais officially unveiled the provincial heritage site plaque at Freedom Square. Together with Heritage Western Cape and the City of Cape Town s facilitation, the socio-political significance of Freedom Square will now officially be acknowledged and promoted as a provincial heritage site.
