University officials say UTEP is prepared to meet the needs of these incoming students.
The pandemic has impacted education at every level and schools across the U.S. are trying to determine how to address potential learning loss and gaps in education, particularly among K-12 students. Wilson said the university will push to make higher education an option for more in the community. UTEP focuses intensely on students who have been historically underrepresented by higher education, and if you look at the demographics of the students that we serve, two-thirds of them come from families making less than $37,000 a year, half of them are the first in their families to go to college, about a quarter of them come from families making less than $20,000 a year, Wilson said. So this is a university that changes lives, and we are deeply committed to that mission.
