Northwestern Mutual chief puts support behind private, charter schools

Northwestern Mutual CEO John Schlifske, frustrated by the Milwaukee Public Schools board and the teachers union, and calling for a shift in education support, has announced a $750,000 commitment to City Forward Collective with a focus on private and charter schools. Schlifske made the announcement in an op-ed to the Journal Sentinel, posted online and to be published in Sunday s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel s Ideas Lab section. As a stakeholder, we just don’t see decisions being made to optimize student success at MPS, Schlifske said. Schlifske also said that Northwestern Mutual will be reaching out to others in the philanthropic and business community to support the goal of an additional 5,000 seats in high-quality schools by 2025, as measured by state report cards based on standardized tests and other metrics.

It enrolls its students through a lottery. MCP students are 30%-plus more likely to be proficient or advanced in reading and math than their MPS peers. A masked student arrives at Milwaukee College Prep s North Avenue campus. Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is set to lose 2,000 students and at least $4 million next year, as charter school network Milwaukee College Prep (MCP) cuts ties with the district. MPS has contracts with 15 independent charter schools, including the four MCP locations. The charter schools are independently-run but publicly-funded, and are accountable to the MPS Board. On a windy day in late April, staff at Milwaukee College Prep’s North Avenue campus are greeting students as they get dropped off at three separate entrances for social distancing purposes.
