Signs at Milwaukee s former Lindbergh Park now officially bear Lucille Berrien s name

Back in April, some Milwaukee residents gathered at Lindbergh Park and campaigned to change the name of the park in the Arlington Heights neighborhood to Lucille Berrien Park. On Thursday, their efforts paid off when the Milwaukee County Board voted unanimously to rename the park after Berrien.

Wisconsin bill would cut funding to cities that defund the police

309 2 minutes read On March 11, a new bill, referred to as SB-119 or the “Fund the Police Bill,” was discussed in the Wisconsin legislature at a public hearing in Madison. Under this bill, cities and towns that make any decreases to local police budgets would have money deducted from the amount each municipality receives from the state budget. In addition, the amount taken from these municipalities would be distributed to those that did not take any money from their police budget.  Pro-police policies like this are an effective counter to any kind of legislative reforms aimed at defunding, restructuring or creating community control of the police. Due to the conservative nature of Wisconsin politics, very few have spoken out against the proposal. Milwaukee County Supervisors Ryan Clancy and Joseph J. Czarnezki have been among few elected officials to actively oppose the bill.

On Saturday, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression hosted a press conference at the park with Ms. Berrien in attendance to demand the park be named in her honor, and that the money used to make the changes come from the Milwaukee County Sheriff Office’s overtime budget. The Milwaukee Alliance focuses on ending police misconduct, prison profiteering, racist political repression and economic injustice.

Milwaukee, January 9, 2021: No COPS grant, CPAC Now! Rally and Caravan

4 P.M. KOPS Park, Milwaukee, WI In December 2020, organizers in Milwaukee successfully pressured the Common Council to vote NO to the COPS grant. The COPS grant would have allowed for 30 more MPD officers to partake in the oppressive federal initiative “Operation Legend,” which has unfairly targeted Black and Brown communities. Unfortunately, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd decided to put the COPS grant back on the table. On January 19, 2021, the common council will revisit the COPS grant. The community must take action to say NO to the COPS grant and YES to CPAC (Civilian Police Accountability Council). We have been telling them to decrease police funding and yet they are demanding more. We have been demanding community control of the police and they are firmly defending the system in place. They are accountable to us, the people they represent. Join us at Kops park to say NO to COPS!
