SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) â A death that played out strikingly similar to the killing of George Floyd at a Southfield mall left the family of 25-year-old McKenzie Cochran devastated.
The verdict in the case involving George Floydâs murder has tremendously impacted the Cochran family, and now the attorney general for the state of Michigan is updating the status of his case.
A Michigan city has agreed to a $1.25 million settlement over the fatal 2015 shooting of a Black man accused of stealing an energy drink.
Kevin Matthews, 35, was fleeing on foot when Dearborn Police Officer Chris Hampton shot him nine times.
Hampton, 33, took his own life just weeks before the settlement was announced Tuesday. Matthews’ family and Dearborn, a Detroit suburb, reached the settlement out of court as a result of Hampton’s sudden death.
Mathews’ family now “wants to move forward,” attorney Milt Greenman told The Associated Press.
The shooting happened on Dec. 23, 2015, when Hampton noticed Matthews walking by several hours after he was accused of stealing a can of Red Bull from a gas station.

A Detroit suburb has agreed to a $1.25 million settlement in a lawsuit over the fatal police shooting of an unarmed Black man who was chased on foot and killed in 2015 after being accused of stealing an energy drink, an attorney said Tuesday.
The deal between Dearborn and Kevin Matthews’ family came weeks after the Dearborn officer, Chris Hampton, 33, killed himself.
Hampton insisted in a lawsuit deposition that he was on the ground and Matthews was over him, trying to get his gun at the end of an intense foot chase. Matthews, who was shorter and 75 pounds (34 kilograms) lighter than the officer, was shot nine times.
