Fire in Ogemaw County claims lives of two children, ages 2 and 5

MILLS TWP, MI A residential fire in rural Ogemaw County has claimed the lives of two children.
At 8:02 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported fire at a trailer home 1867 First Oak St. in Mills Township.
“Our initial call was that everybody did not get out of the home,” said Sheriff Brian D. Gilbert. “We responded and saw two adults severely burnt from trying to get their children out.”
The 40-year-old father and 32-year-old mother managed to get three of their children out of the residence. A 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter did not survive.

Thursday, Dec. 24
11:09 p.m. Deputies were dispatched to a Greendale Township residence in reference to the report of a single gun shot, which was heard by neighbors. The residence was dark and secured upon deputies arrival. The homeowner eventually arrived, and it was determined that the noise heard was an in-ground animal trap.
