When it comes to population, well, as Mosquero resident and business man Pete Callahan put it, “there’s not a lot of voters out here.”
But that doesn’t mean that the La Frontera del Llano Scenic Byway, that stretches not quite 100 miles from Logan to Abbott, is not without its charms.
As a matter of fact, the wide-open spaces unfilled by folks, may be one of the area’s most rewarding aspects.

“It’s a beautiful drive,” Callahan said. “You cross canyons and the caprock of eastern New Mexico. The caprock was the shore of an ancient ocean in prehistoric times. It stretches from northern Harding County all the way down through Melrose and Grady. There’s an 800-foot difference below and above. That’s a pretty significant rise in elevation.”
She was 82.
Silver was discovered by a police search party around 11 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, on the Burlingame hiking trail after her friend Deanna McLemore reported her missing from her home at the Woodlake Condominium complex in San Mateo. She was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where she died due to the severe injuries she suffered after falling, said Burlingame police.
Silver, who retired several years ago, worked as a pioneering stock administration specialist and helped usher in the era of Silicon Valley tech companies awarding equity packages to employees, according to her son Reed Wellman.
Always thoughtful and passionate about learning, Wellman said his motherâs lasting dedication to her career is a testament to how much she liked being in the thick of things.
