The River Cafe interior
Design has always been integral to The River Cafe’s identity, right back to the earliest stages of its conception. Founded by Ruth Rogers (now Lady Rogers CBE) and the late Rose Gray in 1987, the two women changed the London restaurant scene forever with their elegant, unfussy take on regional Italian cooking – and refreshing approach to how the dining experience should look and feel.
Ruth (or Ruthie, as she’s widely known) has been married to the celebrated architect Lord Rogers for almost 50 years. The man behind such notable projects as Paris’s Centre Pompidou, the Lloyd’s building and the Millenium Dome, he also famously designed The River Cafe site, transforming a disused warehouse next to his own riverside offices. His slick, functionalist aesthetic is a unifying thread that runs throughout the restaurant to this day.
Against the backdrop of the beautiful blue silhouette of Lochnagar Mountain, Prince Philip can be seen lying on the grass, with his hat casually balanced on his knee. He is propping himself on the elbow, accompanied closely by the Queen, who smiles warmly at the camera. The Queen sits in a relaxed posture while donning a tartan skirt, a turquoise blouse and cardigan, and her signature pearls. The duke wears a blue sweater matching the mountains behind them.
