get? probably, if he can get it. it s by no means a done deal, it s a done deal, suzanne. it s got to get through the senate and then house of representatives. let s see what happens as far as amendments are concerned, what kind of nra-type amendments might be attached that would turn off the other side, the gun control advocates. but you re right, it doesn t include all of the universal background checks, the expansion that the president, so many democrats really wanted. but this is a compromise by two moderate members of the senate. both of whom have good records with the nra. pat toomey and joe. we ll see if the republican gets this. he s not going to get the other stuff he really wanted, the high capacity ammunition clips, he s not going to get anything on the military-type assault weapons, but this is a step as far as the white house is concerned in the right direction. but it certainly doesn t go as far as he would have liked. does he think it s going to
kansas want to see more children gunned down with semiautomatic military-type assault weapons. with hundred-round or two-round clips. i don t think the people of kansas want to see people able to order 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet. i think the people of kansas are like the people of the united states. in that they recognize that, look, gun control is an issue where reasonable people can disagree f. the nra wants to protect the rights of hunters to hunt, okay. but when they say, we can t limit the size of an ammunition clip to some sensible number, that we can t check to make sure that an escaped murderer can t go to a gun show and buy a gun or a homicidal maniac can t go to a gun show and buy a gun, that s not sensible anymore, and
reinstated, things like that. but where should this conversation go so that it doesn t become politically divisive and polarizing where suddenly everybody by april is in their respective corners on the gun issue? well, that s, you know, precisely the issue. it is complicated. for me, there are three pieces to this. i am in favor of banning a military-type assault weapons and the high capacity gun magazine. that being said, i think there are two other pieces to this. one is the mental health issue and the third is that, really, the glorification of violence in our society. and let me speak about the mental health issue for a moment. that comes under the jurisdiction of the labor health labor and human services subcommittee that i am the senior democrat on. we have the opportunity to look at the substance abuse and mental health issues.
