military s handling of the case of navy seal eddie gallagher who was convicted of misconduct but acquitted of war crimes during his tour in iraq. instead of allowing the military to complete their review of the case, president trump intervened first via twitter telling the military to, quote, get back to business and allow gallagher to retire without losing his seal status. another official who stood up to the president is now out of a job. joining me now to talk more about this striking and very public dispute is former nato commander and msnbc analyst admiral james stavridis. i think it s unprecedented in this administration. the closest to it is secretary
but not in the service any more. he tweeted, quote, a military strained by 17 years of war and sequestrati sequestration doesn t need this. and the u.s. doesn t need its military to, quote, defend against a group of unarmed migrants, including many women and kids. do you agree with him? well, i don t know whether they re needed or not. i don t know whether we ve got other assets available. and i know that secretary mattis would be very forthright and say this would be the number that s needed. that s really hard to comment on. i think you should send what s needed. this particular announcement felt a little more symbolic than it did nuts and bolts practical. because we didn t really make a clear description of what they were going to do or what they re required for. because that s the way it starts. you say, i have this problem, this requirement, and then you ask the secretary of defense to put his people into the process of sourcing that intelligently, rather than starting with a nu
phone line that they talk on about where they re flying over syria and how they stay out of each other s way. what does this all mean? military to military, u.s. to russian military. they quietly talk and make sure they stay out of each other s way. there seems to be a lot of ire, anger, if you will, on part of the russian ministry of defense, making this very strong statement this morning and saying in the areas where they operate that basically any other objects in the air, if you will, will be treated as potential they talk about escorting them as targets the coalition tells us they re still trying to figure it all out.
