has tried it before. i m jonathan capehart, this is the sunday show. congress has until friday night to pass funding legislation to keep the government open. despite his best efforts to avoid a government shutdown, the new house speaker appears to be barreling towards one. yesterday afternoon, house speaker mike johnson released a stopgap spending bill, and unusual to teared continuing resolution that would fund some government agencies until january 2019, and as eight through february 2nd. a vote could come as early as tuesday. this is meant to avoid a messy shutdown right before the holidays, but it is a risky gambit by speaker johnson who has only been speaker for 18 days. his untested funding scheme doesn t contain spending cuts which is a demanded some republicans, and it doesn t contain funding for israel which is a bipartisan demand of the senate and the white house. speaker johnson passed passages already in trouble, he can only lose four votes, and three of his f
to put together. it has a bit of a historical sweep. because you need to understand some of the history. and the history itself is fascinating. i think there s nothing more interesting than history. i mean it s everything. so it talks a little bit about how this war in afghanistan started, and it didn t start with 9/11. it started a lot earlier than that. and there s two types of name narrative threats. one, a soldier story. a soldier i met there right before a fire fight. and i stayed in touch with him over the years and his family, to see what kind of impact this week intense combat has. and then this contrast of going from an intense comeback situation, to coming back to the u.s.. and such a small percentage of people in the united states participate of showing the burden of military responsibility. so it s very hard for them to do that. and then what it s been like for the afghan people. so these two parallel

just briefly if you could, what faith do you have in this vetting of the national guard? presumably anybody with really bad intentions would have covered their tracks by now. they would have been uncovered already by now. again, this is thejob of the fbi, but by vetting, they will take every name, date of birth and social security number in the united states and see if those names come up on any type of list, on any militia individual. i ve heard estimates of perhaps, at least for me obviously, if not 75 or 80% of the voting membership of the guard may have voted for president trump but again, i think most people have the ability to set rate their military responsibility from their political viewpoints. we ve seen this go wrong in countries around the world but i think every effort is being made right now to make sure it doesn t happen in washington, as well as the 50 different state capitals where there were warnings
