on campus we had a lot of people hop would rally around us and support us. but once the president started talking about we are going to diminish our troop strength, people start rethinking what s happening including the afghan security and military forces, the very people we are trying to support there, when they start wondering about our commitment much as the iraqis had to wonder about our commitment, then the taliban like the bad guys in iraq, they gain the upper hand. and we have seen not only with the loss of these six wonderful americans monday, and other losses we have had this year, we see ground being lost. over 7,000 iraqi security military policemen killed this year already in afghanistan. i mean afghans killed in afghanistan. the taliban are gaining the upper hands.
candidates calling for troops to be armed. these are the most highly trained people in our country to handle firearms. it s ridiculous to make them check their weapons at the door. they can t defend themselves. reporter: there are two problems military officials say. on large bases like fort hood increased security is in place. letting thousands of troops on base carry firearms could cause havoc. hundreds of recruiting stations around the country, there is vulnerability, since the offices are open to the public. the military under law cannot conduct deadly operations on american streets. there are questions whether military personnel are trained in the same skills as law enforcement. many of them don t qualify every year in weapons. and they would not have the same skills as some of the security policemen or military policemen would have.
gates, enforce civilian guards with military policemen. you re going to do more patrols not only on the base itself but within the housing area. for a naval base, more small boats conducting reconnaissance around bigger ships, more patrols around aircraft on air force bases. all of these things are to increase awareness and to practice some drills. you do this in order to just be ready for any kind of threat. with the security conditions the way they are around the world and what we ve seen in different countries and in some places in the united states, this is a prudent measure by the commander. anthony, we had an analyst on the network yesterday who questioned the wisdom of announcing the changes and the increase in the security level. as a journalist, i always want to know. there is an argument that some are making. i think it is important, though, again as we in what was being mentioned, it raises that level of situational
