yeah, ayman, i think that s exactly right. this is both a moment of opportunity endanger for ukrainians. the opportunity that the chaos in russia leads to breakdown of military discipline on the russian lines, that the russian lines break, that ukrainian forces are able to make major gains. we have not seen that so far. but the danger is what you said. it s that vladimir putin, backed into a corner, feels he needs to be even tougher in ukraine. that he cannot afford to be seen to be weak. vladimir putin at various points has made veiled references to the nuclear warheads and that keir was talking about. he has said he is going to move tactical nuclear weapons from russia into belarus, which neighbors ukraine also. so ukraine increasingly encircled by a ring of russian nuclear weapons. so be careful what you wish for
zelenskyy offered in russian to russian troops, your sense of how president zelenskyy, how ukraine takes advantage of the recent unrest in russia? well will the, the fervent hope of fervent hope of officials in kyiv is that the chaos in russia leads to some kind of opportunity on the battlefield here in ukraine. ukrainian forces are at this hour engaged in this long awaited counteroffensive in the south and in the east. so far, even with those wagner mercenaries leaving ukraine and going into southern russia the russian lines have held. we ve not seen any evidence of large-scale military discipline breaking down or anything like that. so that is something a day of a disappointment for the ukrainians. but this is far from over and as matt bradley was saying a minute ago we don t know what the future holds for russia s armed forces in terms of whether these wagner mercenaries can make nice alongside these
they weren t willing to send their own forces. so it s not at all clear that they are going to be able to make nice and go back to fighting side by side. the fervent hope of the ukrainians is that this chaos in russia is going to lead to some kind of break down a military discipline on the battlefield. that it will create some kind of opening that ukrainian forces currently conducting that counteroffensive in the southeast can go through. off until this point, we have not seen that breakdown. even with wagner mercenaries leaving southern ukraine and crossing back into russia. marching north toward moscow. it does not appear that the ukrainian officials have been able to exploit that they. been able to find weaknesses in the russian lines. as we ve been saying, the situation is far from settled. it may very well be that if vladimir putin feels that he is effectively fighting a war on two fronts now, trying to shore up his authority at home, even as he prosecutes this invasion here in uk
where things will be here in russia in the days and weeks and months ahead. all right, keir, stay with me for a second. let s cross over from russia to kyiv, ukraine, where raf sanchez is. the big question i think in the past 24 hours, as it relates to ukraine, is how will what happened inside russia impact what ukraine does from here on out, if at all? give us a sense of whether or not that discussion and those questions are being answered in kyiv tonight. reporter: yeah, ayman, just the last few seconds, the air raid sirens have been a blaring here in kyiv. we haven t seen any explosions yet, no sign of russian missiles or drones. but it s a reminder that even with the extraordinary events of the last 36 hours and russia, the war continues to rage here in ukraine. officials in kyiv have been hoping that the chaos on the russian side might translate into some kind of breakdown of military discipline on the battlefield. we have not yet seen that,
