At least 16 police departments in Maine are not complying with state law that requires them to adopt rules for how they will divert homeless people away from the criminal justice system, according to a first-of-its-kind review conducted by the Bangor Daily News.

Former cop is charged

A former Calais police officer who resigned from the force Jan. 30 was charged Friday after allegedly furnishing fentanyl and hydrocodone on the grounds of Narraguagus Junior/Senior High School in Harrington, according to a copy of the charging document provided by the Office of the Maine Attorney General.
Jeffrey Bishop, 53, of Cherryfield was arrested on four counts of aggravated drug furnishing and one count of unlawful drug trafficking by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, for whom Bishop once worked, and agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
Bishop resigned from the Calais Police Department effective Jan. 30, according to Calais City Manager Michael Ellis.
