returned to work the next day. around that same time it is believed that some extreme anti-abortion activists had started circulating this wanted poster for dr. tiller, making clear that he was a marked man. and then in 2009 an anti-abortion activist walked into dr. tiller s wichita church, his church, the only place where dr. tiller showed up at the same time every week, a place they knew he could be found at that time, and scott roder shot george tiller dead. and when they killed george tiller in that church in 2009, that ended abortion in wichita. actually, in that whole part of kansas. dr. tiller s clintonic was closed into after his murder. it has been vacant in wichita ever since. when we interviewed dr. mila means in 2011, she was planning on picking up where dr. tiller left off. she had begun the extra training she needed to become an abortion provider so she could offer that service in addition to her family practice. she was going to re-establish access to abortion in wichita
enough of those already, thank you for asking. by far, the single biggest culture war issue in kansas is abortion, access to which is a long-settled constitutional right. this is where kansas s history of making culture war into real war comes in. a historyç of john brown facin down the pro-slavery extremists riding over the border from missouri. culture war is a metaphor, up to the point when it starts to look like a real war, starts to get fought that way. a year and a half ago, the culture war in kansas went from metaphor to reality, went from bullying and harassment to murder, with the assassination of a wichita abortion provider dr. george tiller in his church. the first doctor to say out loud she s willing to replace him, dr. mila means has been warned by anti-abortion extremists that her life, too, is in danger. abortion doctors and patients have been under siege nationwide
