looks like we might have had a hero tsa officer here wounded. he might have tried to confront or stop the gunman. police in l.a., i ve been out there and worked with them before, they are very good. it s a large facility with a lot of police. so quickly this guy was taken down where he couldn t hurt a multitude of people. the faa is telling nbc news there is a ground stop in effect for lax. the flights are on the ground bound for lax, will be held on the ground. you can see we ve got air yeeri. this happened 12:30 eastern time, 9:30 a. time, pacific time. because of the east coast delays, east coast bad weather, there were a lot of people in those terminals. mike taibbi still standing by for us in l.a. mike, at this point, what are you hearing from the lapd? well, the lapd is still on the scene, obviously, because
as mike taibbi, tory belleci, safe travels to you. i m sure this is a stressful moment to say the least. glad everyone there is safe. pete williams reporting officials believe that the incident is over. pete, lets go back to you and the latest you re hearing from law enforcement officials. apparently the local authorities are in charge here. lapd, l.a. fire department taking the lead on this investigation. so the federal authorities are helping out. obviously tsa is involved because this happened near a screening checkpoint. we believe that one of the shooting victims was a tsa employee, a screener, we believe. everything we ve indicated, heard from law enforcement people back here is it s over. it happened very quickly this person with what we re told some kind of rifle or long gun approached the security checkpoint. shots were fired.
nothing. in terms of the investigation, it s still an active investigation, open homicides remain open indefinitely. the d.a. in this case, alan garnett, says that it remains an active investigation it remains an open investigation but is not at the moment active, so there s no new evidence to follow up at this point. craig. we know that patsy ramsey died in 2006 from ovarian cancer. have we heard anything so far from john ramsey, any reaction? reporter: nothing new. we reached out to his attorneys, and the only statement we have from that side is one of the filings in this case, basically opposing the motion to release this document, basically saying that releasing this document now of an unprosecuted indictment only further tends to defame john and patricia ramsey, patricia ramsey died in 2006. john ramsey has written two books about them, both of them pro claiming their innocence in every form imaginable since the death of their daughter in 1996. mike taibbi live for us in

fact the grand jury signed an indictment which the d.a. did not sign and declined to prosecute. what they are saying and one local reporter put it this way. the grand jury said they knew john and patsy ramsey were in the house that night, 1996. they knew something violent and tragic happened that resulted in the death of jonbenet ramsey and so they were to be indicted for that. the language was ambiguous. they said each did knowingly and recklessly let a child be placed in a situation where there was injury and death of jonbenet ramsey. i m paraphrasing. each of them did knowingly assist another person unnamed in the indictment who was a suspect of the crime of first degree murder. that was it. no new information. the status of the investigation remains inactive but open. we re no closer to knowing what that 17 years ago. nbc s mike taibbi, thank you. so hard to believe that s been
