Ted Thompson dies at 68

Thompson played 10 seasons for the Houston Oilers as an undrafted, special teams linebacker and was hired by then Packers General Manager Ron Wolf in 1992 as a scout. His diligent work ethic and devotion to scouting had him rise through the ranks to become director of pro personnel. Thompson left Green Bay to follow Mike Holmgren to the Seattle Seahawks where he was the Vice-President of Football Operations. After Wolf retired with the Packers in 2001, Head Coach Mike Sherman was also given the GM duties. Packers President Bob Harlan convinced Thompson to return as General Manager in 2005 and after one season, he fired Sherman and hired Mike McCarthy. Thompson’s very first draft choice was Aaron Rodgers. The Thompson-McCarthy tandem produced a Super Bowl XLV Champion in 2010. In 2017, Thompson was re-assigned to a consultant’s role after it was disclosed he was suffering from an autonomic disorder that impacted his ability to perform the tireles

Ted Thompson, former Green Bay Packers general manager, dies at 68

Packers News GREEN BAY, Wis. – Ted Thompson, longtime general manager of the Green Bay Packers who built the team that won Super Bowl XLV, died Wednesday at age 68, the team announced. Thompson drafted future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers with his first pick as a general manager. That set the stage for the succession of Hall of Famer quarterback Brett Favre and the building of a team that won the Super Bowl in 2011. His teams in one stretch won 19 consecutive games and made the playoffs eight consecutive years. “He’s a humble, intelligent guy that always put the team first. He always kept a steady hand, never panicked,” said longtime friend Mike Reinfeldt when Thompson was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 2019. Reinfeldt roomed with Thompson when they played for the Houston Oilers and worked with him in Green Bay and Seattle.
