Overdose has been a leading cause of death in Alberta for many years, and the increased feelings of isolation, stress and anxiety brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic have exacerbated this issue of late. In opioid overdoses, the actions of first responders have life and death consequences, and last week the quick actions of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP made the difference.
In the early morning hours of May 18
th, 2021, the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP responded to a priority call to assist EMS with a medical emergency. Upon arrival, the responding RCMP members took over performing CPR on an unconscious male. It was suspected that the male had overdosed on drugs, so Narcan was administered. Thankfully the male came to, and was treated by EMS upon their arrival.
