Year in review: Atherton bids adieu to train service, nears completion of new civic center

Time to read: about 3 minutes Construction resumed on Atherton s civic center on April 10 after a three-week break. Photo by Magali Gauthier/The Almanac. Atherton made progress on construction of its long-awaited $31.6 million civic center project in 2020 despite a brief shutdown in March because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. There were also changes in leadership, the closure of the town s historic train station, license plate reader installations and the possible return of burglars from two years ago. It, like every other nearby town, had to adjust to holding its government meetings virtually, on Zoom. In July or August 2021, the town will begin transitioning the police department and other employees into the administrative building because construction workers need to demolish what is left of the police department building to complete the project, said City Manager George Rodericks in a Dec. 22 email. Time to read: about 2 minutes Atherton Mayor Elizabeth Lewis. Photo by Magali Gauthier. The Atherton City Council selected Elizabeth Lewis to serve as mayor and Mike Lempres to serve as vice mayor for 2021 during a Wednesday, Dec. 16, Zoom meeting. We have learned how to live with adversity and how to be creative with how we conduct bu

Balaji [Srinivasan] leads by fear and by money,” says Nathalie McGrath who, as Coinbase’s VP of People, watched as infighting engulfed the company.  Balaji’s style as he led the charge for a non-corporate vision of crypto was abrasive but effective. For someone who by all accounts did not work well with others, [Coinbase’s former CTO] was remarkably good at office politics. Anyone in his way got edged aside with alacrity. Balaji either fired them outright or, through back-office maneuvering, stripped them of influence until, totally demoralized, they quit on their own accord.
