The New Mexico Public Education Department is weighing its options after learning its failure to meet a deadline to submit school funding data to the federal government could cost the state millions of dollars.
The PED s submission was three days late, federal officials say, and now the agency has asked the state treasurer to transfer more than $37.5 million from a state reserve fund by the end of the month to make distributions to local education agencies.
The shortfall at the state agency comes after the PED in March 2020 missed a deadline by which to submit a full application seeking U.S. Department of Education approval to take credit for federal Impact Aid in the state s formula for funding public schools.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â It s been more than 15 years, but a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is back on dry land.
The Pleasant Hill, Missouri, Police Department, with help from the Pleasant Hill Fire Protection District, Stever s Tow, the Missouri Highway Patrol Dive Team, Mike Hyatt, a Harrisonville, Missouri, firefighter and the Cass County Sheriff s Office, pulled the car from City Lake on Wednesday, according to a post on the department s Facebook page.
Police are investigating.
No other information was available Wednesday night.
The district will also continue to provide pickup meals for remote students at no cost.
Starting Wednesday, students learning virtually can get weekly bundles of meals on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

ROYAL SHIFT: Atrisco Heritage Academy is trading in the typical homecoming and prom court titles and voting process for a more inclusive approach. The district said it’s the first APS high school to use a gender-neutral model.
“Starting this year, students will be selected to the school’s Royal Courts based on merit and vote count, but not by the male/female categories,” the district wrote in a news release. “The highest number of votes will determine the winners. Winners will be recognized individually and as a group rather than be partnered with members of the opposite sex.”
