Commission Hears About Program To Help Properties Pay For Improvements

July 26, 2021 The St. Joseph City Commission is looking at a new way to attract development. During a Monday meeting, commissioners heard from Cornerstone Alliance and Lean and Green Michigan about the Property Assessed Clean Energy program, or PACE. Cornerstone’s Rob Cleveland said PACE financing allows a property owner to voluntarily enter into a special assessment agreement to pay for energy efficient improvements. “A real world example right here in St. Joe would be somebody buying one of our buildings in downtown that needs $100,000 in a new storefront, which would be new windows and maybe an HVAC unit,” Cleveland said. “So they would get that $100,000 lended to them up front, and then we would come to the city and ask you to apply a special assessment just to that building that would then be repaid on a 10 year, 20 year, 25 year basis. No taxpayer dollars, nobody else is being taxed.”

St Joseph City Commission Resumes In-Person Meetings

July 12, 2021 Some normalcy is back in the city of St. Joseph, as the city commission has held its first in-person meeting since March 2020. Mayor Mike Garey opened the meeting with a thank you. “I would just like to thank all the folks who have received their vaccine. Because of all the work that the city, the state, and the county have done, we’ve reached the threshold where we can meet live.” He encouraged people who haven’t been vaccinated for COVID-19 to do actual research. “I know some folks still have concern about the vaccines,” said Garey. “I hope they will talk to their neighbors and learn more about the vaccines because we don’t want to go back into Zoom meetings again. We don’t want another shutdown. So thanks everyone for working together and allowing us to reopen.”
