Scott Servais expects Mariners to be buyers at deadline

Originally posted on MLB Trade Rumors  |  By Steve Adams  |  Last updated 7/8/21 After slipping a few games below .500 in mid-June, the Mariners have rallied back with a 14-7 showing that has them three games over .500, at 45-42. That still places them nine games back in a  tough AL West, but they’re only three-and-a-half games down in the Wild Card standings. Seattle has looked like one of the many teams whose deadline trajectory could very well be determined by how the team fares in its next 10 games or so, but manager Scott Servais suggested in an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that he expects the front office to operate as buyers (Twitter link, with audio).

D-backs panel discusses Jackie Robinson

• Leroi Roscoe Chappelle, who is the stepfather of former Arizona general manager Dave Stewart. The soon-to-be 102-year-old Chappelle is a native of Phoenix and he competed against Robinson in college track meets. • Dr. Raymond Doswell, the vice president of curatorial services for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. • Dr. Michael Long, the author and editor of the book 42 Today: Jackie Robinson & His Legacy. Chappelle first met Robinson when he was 15 or 16 years old and training for the U.S. Olympic high-jump team. Chappelle went to visit relatives in Los Angeles around that time and encountered Robinson. The two later reconnected when Robinson was attending Pasadena Junior College and Chappelle was at Phoenix (Junior) College. The only time the two competed in the same event was a relay race in which he said he was fortunate enough to move Robinson to the middle of the dirt track where it was muddy, slowing Robinson down so he could beat him.

March 19, 2021 Hi there. It’s me again. This week, I’m joined by my dear friend Jorge Arangure, former sports writer turned New York Times Metro editor covering the pandemic. In our first segment, we talk about the new rules in the minors, extension season, and some teams’ plans to fill their parks with fans. Then we are joined by Russell Dorsey, the Cubs beat writer for The Chicago Sun Times, who talks about an offseason of mixed messages on the North Side, and the numerous questions about the team heading into the 2021 season. Then it’s listener emails and a long discussion about transitioning from sports to real media, as well as covering COVID while also getting it. We hope you enjoy!
