For yourself in this great country. I have never forgotten those words. Abraham lincoln once said we deserve a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Everyone, including the president of the United States, should play by the rules. That is the american way. Unfortunately donald trump sees things differently. As we approach tax day, it is important to remember that every sident since gerald ford democrats and republicans have released their tax return to the American People. Before the election, donald trump repeatedly promised to release his tax returns, just like jimmy carter, ronald reagan, george h w bush, bill clinton, george w. Bush and barack obama before him. As president , donald trump has broken this promise. Is he hiding something from the American People . I certainly hope not. Any other committee in congress. Subcommittee, there is widespread agreement on broadband deployment and getting more spectrum into the market. I think those are two areas where democrats and republicans certainly can work together. Ranking memberw on the subcommittee, what you bring to the table . Mr. Doyle i think my perspective is i came to congress not to represent companies but consumers. Mind, i havein always been a strong advocate for competition and innovation. When Companies Compete with one another, one of the ways they compete for that business is they innovate. In areas of the country where you see competition, consumers they lower prices and latest innovations come at latest stateoftheart equipment and services. Where there is no competition, consumers do not see that. I have been a champion to make sure we have a market where companies can compete on a level Playing Field and consumers can benefit from that competition by new, innovative recs and lower cost. A troubling statistic i discussed in the book is 40 of the sons born to fathers in the lowest quintile of income remain in lowest quintile of income and so demography is often destiny. If you are born to a father who was very polar, theres a very good chance, not overwhelming chance, but a very good chance youre going to be poor as well. To the discussion that poverty relates to blacks and i discuss why that is the case then why much of this discussion can be very misleading. The poverty rate is slightly lower than that of native americans and alaska natives. But more important point is more than 75 of blacks are not poor so the kinds of generalizations and images with warm are unfortunately quite inaccurate, though it is the case that many, too many blacks are born into poverty and will remain in poverty. The most important conclusion that i think analysts of poverty have come through in trying to determine what the trend is is that today, the class gap is even greater than the racial
And democratic representative mike doyle of pennsylvania is the new Ranking Member on the energy and commerce subcommittee on communications and technology, and hes our guest this week on the communicators. Representative doyle, if we could start before we get into specific issues, given the atmosphere in washington, the atmosphere on capitol hill, are there issues, do you think, that can be found and worked on in a bipartisan manner when it comes to Telecommunications Policy . Guest ing sure. And i think the energy and Commerce Committee has a long history of bipartisan cooperation. Weve put more bipartisan bills out of our committee, i believe, than any other committee in congress. And in the telecommunications subcommittee, certainly, theres widespread agreement with on broadband deployment and on getting more spectrum out into the market. I think those are two areas where democrats and republicans certainly can work together. Host as the new Ranking Member or the top democrat on th
