John Edrich, who has died aged 83, was one of the most prolific, and also one of the most underrated, of all England batsmen.
The 5,138 runs he scored at an average of 43.54 in 77 Tests between 1963 and 1976 exceeded the totals of all other England left-handers of his era. As an opener, moreover, Edrich had to face the full, fresh fury of Hall and Griffith, Procter and Pollock, Lillee and Thomson, Holding and Roberts.

Adelaide, Dec 19 : India fell for their lowest-ever innings total in their 82-year Test cricket history as they ended at 36 for nine in their second innings by an inspired Australia in the first Test match at the Adelaide Oval here on Saturday. Umesh Yadav, the No. 10, was retired hurt and could not bat.

Adelaide, Dec 19 (IANS) India fell to lowest-ever innings total in their 82-year Test cricket history as they ended at 36 for nine in their second innings against an inspired Australia in the first Test match at the Adelaide Oval here on Saturday. India’s worst Test innings total before this was 42 against Mike Denness’s England at Lord’s in 1974.
Umesh Yadav, the No. 10 batsman, got retired hurt and could not bat.
Australia now need 90 runs to win the first Test and take 1-0 after India had taken a 53-run lead in first innings.
