The highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19, which the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment estimates accounts for more than 50% of recent cases across Colorado, has made its way to Pueblo.
The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment announced Monday that the variant has been confirmed in Pueblo County, where nine cases have been diagnosed so far.
Because overall COVID-19 testing volume is low in Pueblo and the variant can only be identified through DNA sequencing at a lab which can take several days to complete PDPHE Director Randy Evetts said the actual number of Puebloans infected with the Delta variant is likely higher.
A former correctional officer and newcomer to Pueblo County is running for county sheriff next year and says his self-described “outsider” status is an advantage in the race. As an outsider, with all this background and experience, since I don’t know anybody in there, part of my platform is I don’t owe anyone anything,” Mike Celentano, 60, said.
“Nobody owes me anything. I can go in there and perform a real, unbiased, from-the-top-down audit of everything: personnel, procedure and budget.”
Celentano has 28 years of experience in law enforcement and corrections across Connecticut, Maine and Florida.
After four years of active duty in the U.S. Navy from late 1980 to 1985, he became an aerospace engineer for United Technologies Corp., but kept looking for ways to become involved with public safety in his community. He found that chance when he became a part-time fish and game constable in Connecticut not his dream, but a start.
