Prime cattle from across the region competed for the inaugural Paul Davis Memorial Trophy at Norwich Livestock Market - named in honour of the popular market director who died last month aged 76.
Mr Davis, better known as “PD”, was described as “a loyal supporter and friend of Norwich market, and a valued director for the last five years”.
A trophy in his honour was the top prize at a show at the Hall Road market on May 22, where the championship was awarded to Matt Barker of Diss, with a Blonde cow and a young British Blue cross bull calf at foot – which were bought for £2,400 by Mr Davis’ widow Mandy, from Davis Dairies in Foxley.
HUNDREDS of emergency food parcels were handed out to children in north east Essex every week during the pandemic, figures have revealed. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis there has been an unprecedented number of families in need having to use food banks. Latest data published by the Trussell Trust shows a record 2.5 million packages were distributed by its network of food banks across the UK in 2020-21. During this period, the charity handed out 13,513 emergency food parcels in Colchester, with 5,815 of them - more than 100 a week - going to children. In Tendring, volunteers gave out 3,635 packages, of which 1,384 went to children.
Plans - Jayne Gee (centre) with Daniel Watts from the Tollgate Partnership and Stanway MP Priti Patel and right Mike Beckett from Colchester Foodbank THE firm behind the Tollgate Village development has provided a new distribution centre for Colchester Foodbank. Stanway-based Tollgate Partnership Limited has handed over the former Office World at Tollgate Retail Park to the foodbank for the next 18 months. The 10,000 sq ft building is five times the size of the foodbank’s current distribution centre at Moorside, Colchester, and will allow volunteers to receive, sort and distribute donations more efficiently. Foodbank chief executive officer Mike Beckett said: “We are so grateful to Tollgate Partnership Limited which will make a big difference to us.
2021 looks like it will be our busiest year ever, he said. If Covid is sorted by the summer and if Brexit turns out to be a success then 2020 may remain as our busiest year ever, but it looks like we might have an economic downturn in 2021. We are planning at least for 2021 to be our busiest ever year. The foodbank has roughly doubled in size every two years since it was founded and Mr Beckett said it has far outgrown its existing distribution centre in Moorside, which will close at the end of the month. To cope with its growth, the charity will be moving its distribution operations to new premises near B&M at Tollgate in Stanway in February.
